ACADEMICS

Numerous studies over decades point to better academics in smaller schools. Let’s contrast a few right here in Portland.

Academics based upon 2004 Oregon Test Scores Percent Meeting Standard

School Population 3rd Grade Math 3rd Grade Reading 5th Grade Math 5th Grade Reading
Edwards 199 100% 90% 90% 90%
Smith 219 86% 93% 93% 98%
Abernethy 203 100% 92% 93% 83%
King 525 59% 51% 62% 52%
Boise-Elliot 523 75% 73% 76% 79%
Beach 419 66% 61% 80% 85%
School Population 10th Grade Math 10th Grade Reading
Jefferson High 700 32% 22%

Jefferson High scored the lowest in math and reading scores in 2003 and 2004 of all its peers. It is sheer madness to transfer 7th and 8th graders from Tubman and Whitaker (600 students combined) to the Jefferson campus. It would nearly double the population and more than double the problem there. Jefferson is reeling with serious issues such as academics, classroom discipline, and respect for property. Sending 12-13 year olds to that campus will not improve high school performance, but it will impact pre-pubescent children, irrevocably.
